This call for work was inspired by the Art and Thought of Robert Delford Brown ("Bob"), founder of The First National Church of the Exquisite Panic, Inc. Bob said, "Many religions teach how to get to Nirvana. They all give very complicated directions. The First National Church of the Exquisite Panic, Inc tells you how to get to Nevada. It sounds close and it's simple. You take a bus!"

Bob was a good friend of Wabi Sabi and a former resident of Wilmington before making his ephemeral departure in March, 2009 to the Nevada in the Exquisite dimension. Over the years, Bob made lots of Maps to Nevada and encouraged his followers to make whatever they wanted, too.

One piece of special note included in in this exhibit is a collaborative work by the children of SOLA, created under the direction of Isabel Heblich. During his stay in Wilmington, Bob visited SOLA and let the kids paint his car. (I suspect he also taught them one of the commandments of his Church, namely, Don't Eat Cars.) After his Final Departure, Isabel visited these same kids and they created their own aptly titled "Map to Nevada" in memoriam of Bob, his life, and his Generous art. We approach this exhibit with the same feeling.

Fritzi Huber will be on-hand at the Opening Reception assisting willing participants in navigating their internal landscapes. Just choose an organ to be ballpoint tattooed on your body. Directions to said location, whether by arrow or word, will accompany the image. Gina Gambony will use her Exquisite mystic powers to identify items inside your body you never knew about that can also be included in your body map tattoo.

We expect 20+ works of art from the following list of inspired folk, give or take a few, although as Bob would say, "Who? Knows!" The works are being collected directly prior to the Opening Reception and a final list of participants will be updated right here.

Web Connections

Bob's Church: www.funkup.com

SOLA: www.solaschools.com

Maps (to Nevada?) This exhibit is inspired by the map-making work of artist and founder of the 1st National Church of the Exquisite Panic, namely, Robert Delford Brown and his prolific creation of maps to Nevada. What he said:
"Many religions teach how to get to Nirvana. They all give very complicated directions. The First National Church of the Exquisite Panic, Inc tells you how to get to Nevada. It sounds close and it's simple. You take a bus!"
Maps for this exhibit can take this into account or not. Kate and Meredith have a vision for this coordinated display of work, so much of it is about LIGHT-light as energy (that cannot be created or destroyed), the primeval experience of light at birth, the way light affects color, Reflection, the organic progression of living things toward the light...simultaneously, this work is informed by the natural world, the cyclical/circular patterns of living/dying and the natural movement and patterns of light and shadow. WoW! This is not just a display of the works of two different artists with two different ideas set side by side, but a cooperative venture that has been created through the sharing of ideas. Kate's work is primarily painting (check out her website, link above), while Meredith brings glowing installations inspired by nature. And there's other stuff too, I just can't wait to see it all. Join us for the opening, let's see what they're up to.

The Glitter Days of Late Spring

Addie Wuensch in the House
Even if you've seen our current exhibit, "Glitter Bath" by Addie Wuensch, the art has changed over the course of the month. Glitter is not just a sparkly substance that catches our eye and gums up the vacuum, but is metaphored into the influence of language, fashion, media, and society at large, effectively coating our skin and eyeballs and burying the underlying reality of humanhood. It has been suggested that the mirrored, reflective quality of glitter may most pointedly represent a dulling of the capacity to absorb, possibly a reaction to post-modern architecture in the post-modern world. It has also been suggested that glitter is "the herpes of arts & crafts"; Ms. Wuensch decries this assessment and posits that glitter is an unfortunate but absolutely curable disease, more like gonorrhea.

This exhibit features over a dozen of Ms. Wuensch's mixed-media works, as well as a collection of adornments and readings from her recently published book of poems by the same name (Glitter Bath). Guests are also invited to join us in ritual glitterfication and cleansing, a public service in light of the Azalea Festival happenings just a few blocks away.

Wabi Sabi seeks...

Wabi Sabi Warehouse seeks gallery and studio manager with endless energy, sustained intellectual fortitude and strong fingers. Although often sculptural, my work functions primarily as body adornment and appeals to the public. I am inspired by nature, and in particular the textures and colors of marine life. I attempt to recreate the ruggedness and imperfections found in the natural world. Fabrication techniques, casting and electro-forming allow me to create tactile surfaces on three dimensional forms. By sifting, drawing and painting with enamel, color and detail are added to the forms. In order for this project to proceed, I am asking friends, family and the community to help support the key project by donating unused/ miscut keys. I need 56,000. That’s right: 56,000

‘Keys with a View’ is a temporary public art project to be installed on the fencing that surrounds the construction site of the new residential property, The View on Water Street, in downtown Wilmington. Artist facilitator Dixon Stetler will collect thousands of no-longer used keys and hang them onto the grid of the fence using paperclips.
‘Keys with a View’ is an opportunity for the community to engage in the production of public art. The public will be invited to hang their spare keys onto the fence, or to donate keys for the project. A tremendous sense of pride and kinship comes with accomplishing a project with others, even more so when it is in the public realm. This connection between the community and the art makes for a meaningful public art project.
The key is an object with many symbolic meanings. For a little girl with a diary, a key means privacy. A teenager with a driver’s license sees a key as the promise of freedom. To latch-key kids, children who let themselves in at home after-school, keys represent safety. For a first time homeowner, a key is a dream realized. Thousands of these talismans are safely tucked away in our drawers, until their purpose has been forgotten or relinquished. Keys as we know them are now becoming obsolete, transforming them into an appropriate material for art. Hotel rooms are accessed with plastic cards, and a car starts without ever taking the "key" out of your pocket. Alluding to the future of The View on Water Street as a residential property, keys can also be thought of as opening doors and unlocking new ideas about how we define public art: even a construction worksite can be transformed into an art space.
Dreams of Wilmington, an art education program, fosters self expression while providing a mentoring relationship between artists and at-risk youth. A print making class taught by artist Michael Van Hout is making large two color linoleum cut prints of keys. Numbered prints will be given to project sponsors. Renato Abbate’s ceramic students are making clay keys that they will hang on the fence, and Matt Bumgardner’s photography students are making ‘keyhole’ cameras. An African drumming class led by Sai Collins will collaborate by serenading key hangers as they work on the fence.
A group of high school students through Communities in Schools and Dreams of Wilmington are designated ‘Assistant Project Managers’. Duties include assisting in key donation collection, greeting the public and media at the installation site, explaining project, helping people hang keys, and stamping hands with the official ‘Keys with a View’ stamp on the hands who have participated. The kids will maintain a blog where they document the progress of the fence through photographs and document interactions with the public.
Kids Making It, an afterschool woodworking program in downtown Wilmington, is participating by producing lightweight acrylic keys in various colors and sizes, all inscribed with the Kids Making It logo. Cape Fear River Watch contributes by carving an old canoe paddle into a key. Visitors to the Children’s Museum of Wilmington can paint a key in the art room, and bring it to the fence for installation.

Drop off boxes are located:

Cameron Art Museum

Tidal Creek Co-op

UNCW Art Department

Folk's Cafe

Jengo's Playhouse

or they can be mailed to: 2067 Harrison Street, Wilmington, NC 28401

This venture will be made possible through cooperation, collaboration, and PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE. I appreciate your support of the arts in Wilmington. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely, Dixon Stetler

Dixonstetler@gmail.com

Nature Wars by Abby Spangel Perry- a small group of paintings with a big story

Nature Wars by Abby Spangel Perry is a small group of paintings with a big story. It is a cautionary tale that speaks to our current relationship with the environment. What unfolds through a series of children’s story book style images is a visual account of the abuses against nature experienced through the eyes of a few little bunnies and their choice to stand up to the rats that are at the bottom of the situation. These bunnies face many of the same issues we as a society experience every day. In the end, we all must “draw our own conclusions” and through an interactive piece viewers of Nature Wars are asked to do just that. What solution do you have to offer?
Nature Wars is a series of mixed media drawings/paintings, sound, and interactive art.

The show is the direct result of the luxury of studio space provided through a 2008-2009 NC Arts Council Regional Artist Grant.
Opening reception with the artist: Friday November 6, 7-9pm

Exhibition on view: November 5 through December 13th, 2009

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384333628491408978" style="DISPLAY: block; I soon learned that I joined a beautiful, historic area that has a true dark side. The dark side was a historic separation of race and class.

The housing boom was had just begun to cool off in 2007. I made its final assault in 2008 which put on hold the ‘gentrification’ process that the city encouraged as a renewal of a vital downtown.

There is mixed blessing about the revitalization process as many historic residents were faced with relocation as the area became more expensive to reside in. Property values and taxes have effectively, burdened the low-income residents. The downtown region was marketed as the new, hip neighborhood with the amenities of having central access to the riverfront businesses and landmarks. The poor, black residents were marginally included in this transformation. Additionally, drug and gang activity nag the peaceful existence of young professionals and affluent retirees who decided to nurture the charm of living downtown.

Over the past two years I have photographed some of the nuances that makes Downtown living a great asset, such as, the city festivals, restaurants and access to art performances. But I also photographed the social ills of neglect, poverty, drugs, gangs and crime. The latter is a culture that did not fit in the ‘New Downtown’ historic and revival neighborhood structure. Some might say that these social ills do not fit anywhere else.

I am sharing my experiences with both light and heavy heart. It is a place I now describe as my home – Downtown Wilmington. -Carlton Wilkinson

'Down the Line' Recent work by Erica Morgan at Wabi Sabi Warehouse

Exhibition Dates: February 27-March 20, 2009

Opening Reception:

Friday, February 27th, 7-10pm

Erica Morgan's unconventional artwork revolves around her passion for environmental awareness and sustainability. She uses materials that are both fabricated/manufactured and organic/natural to address the relationship between the two opposites and how they affect each other. All of the fabricated materials she uses are either found, like a discarded sliding glass door frame, or materials previously existing, such as vintage fabrics. The organic material is never alive or still intact with nature when she discovers it and deems it useful and the origin of location for all her materials is absolutely relevant within each piece.

Upon recently moving back to her coastal hometown of Southport, she was faced with a place not recognizable to the little girl who used to go fishing with her dad at 6am on the rocks. The rapid growth of Southport has created development that condemned memories, allowed profit to swallow nostalgia, and ultimately forced the environment to succumb to the people. Of Course, change is inevitable, and Erica understands both sides of this issue within her art.

She believes that neither the organic nor fabricated could exist without the other; just as love would not be love without hate, and life could not be life without death. They simultaneously depend on one another in order to maintain their identities while battling each other for existence. She is not trying to declare the natural or manufactured victorious over the other; because she believes that they do not have to be at odds, and should not be at odds. Ultimately, Erica establishes a balance between the two, believing that in order for society to most efficiently survive, a balance between environment and development is absolutely necessary and urgent.

'Down the line' features unconventional works that address the relationship between Erica and her hometown, her hometown and its growth, and personal relationships that have been influenced due to her hometown.

Please join us on Friday, February 27th, from 7-10pm, for a reception with the artist, and also tour the artist's studio, housed in Wabi Sabi Warehouse.

Wooly Whoopie at Wabi Sabi Warehouse!

Wabi Sabi Warehouse to host 2 Feltmaking Workshops taught by master felter Cynthia Mollenkopf January 30, February 1, 2009

Basics of Feltmaking
Saturday, Jan 31, 12:30 - 5:00pm
$70 includes all supplies

Feltmaking is an ancient art form used for both the creation of wearables as well as artistic self expression. He works with images from memory, depicting the landscape of his childhood in upstate New York, as well as from his current small town home of Wilmington, NC. Boylan is also motivated by the second hand domestic goods he encounters through his work with Habitat for Humanity. "A Passive Aggressive Response to Depression" includes sculpture that resembles furniture and household items reconstructed with discarded materials such as garbage bags and photocopies. Unconventional materials and symbolic elements of design contribute to the breaking down of traditional boundaries between art and functional design. These works challenge us to redefine "furniture".

Please join us on Friday, December 5th, from 7-10pm, for a reception with the artist, and also tour the artist's studio, housed in Wabi Sabi Warehouse.

David Bodhi Boylan has been shown artwork in Boston, MA; Brooklyn, NY; Cleveland, OH; and Quebec City, Quebec. He has recently returned from a month long artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center. This is his first solo exhibition.

Recycled Regurgitations

at Wabi Sabi Warehouse

An exhibition of art created by John Goras

Exhibition dates:October 3-November 21

Opening reception: Friday, October 3rd, 7-10pm

John Goras is as prolific as Picasso, but with an anti-aesthetic. Beauty is not the measure here, instead its about invention, surprise, shock, and revulsion. Any available surface is up for grabs. From sheet linoleum to vinyl wallpaper samples, from old album covers to discarded packaging, he has decorated each with collage, painting, drawing, and sculptural relief. Goras' creations gather and project images in a language both ephemeral and sentimental. His fascination with thrown away toys, photos, pornography, menus, magazines, and movie posters, provides him with an endless palette of junk he can draw from again and again to synthesize his art. John Goras creates works from the debris of our cast off culture, instead of more traditional and lasting materials such as marble, bronze, or oil on canvas.

Overwhelming and relentless, his outrageous postcards have insulted letter carriers for nearly ten years. Postal workers have gone so far as to put the offending Goras creation in an opaque postal envelope before delivering it to a mailbox. The subject matter is often a revolting yet humorous look past the grave, into the things we are far too squeamish to embrace. He breaks the mirror, steps on the crack, spills the salt, and walks under the ladder, all with the hope of improving his luck. Goras' artwork stands out like bloodstains on a wedding dress. Brightly colored, controversial, and smartly designed, he produces a style that is instantly recognizable and impossible to counterfeit.

Celestial Complex 43

Bob Brown at the Cameron with the Endless Tower of Tires and the Glove Palapa. The Palapa is finished. It took longer that I thought it would, which wasn't really that long anyway. I'm still on the fence about a bench. A little distance will provide clarity on the issue.

Inspired by the thatched roof palapas in Belize, the glove palapa provides shade. Palapas are everywhere down there. They are all the same basic construction, yet each one is a little different. I am a big fan of repetition and variety. As a thatched roof, the gloves maintain part of their original purpose of nurturing and protection against the elements.

Art supplies are everywhere! You don't need a kit from A.C. Moore to create. Canvas and paint cost way too much anyway. Rather than buy more stuff, I like to reuse some of the abundant materials I find in a few select dumpsters, in undisclosed locations. (Too bad it's illegal to find useful things in your neighbors trash!) Gloves are such a personal item, with meaning built right in. We've all had a pair.

We've all experienced the loss of one, or that moment when your finger finally pokes through and the original function of the glove ceases. It takes many to make it work. I have learned a great deal about "People Helping People" from Bob Brown. By giving an ordinary disposable object, this collaborative project becomes accessable to all. People who don't usually make art can participate without intimidation.

The stories told by glove donors were a very important part of the process, where and when and how. Many of the gloves were worn to special events or gifts from a loved one. I have great friends who dodge oncoming traffic to rescue gloves from busy intersections. Hockey gloves used as a dog toy, bee keeping gloves from a film set, and "my daughter's first gardening gloves" all became part of the palapa. Folks visit the palapa and identify their glove. They point and say "Oh! There's mine!" I hope they feel a sense of ownership in the piece. The real heroes of this project are the fine garbage men of Wilmington. They donated hundreds of their worn out gloves to the cause. They are very excited to visit this fruit of their labor, at all places, the Cameron Art Museum.

-posted by Dixon Stetler

Birth Art Opening

You've all been there, in one way or another. Also among the 20 selected-artists are sculptor Paul Hill, metalsmith Kee Wilde-Ramsing, painter Abby Perry, photographer Arrow Ross, and filmmaker Bo Webb.

All week long Dixon and I have been working on the lawn at the Cameron Art Museum constructing the Endless Tower of Tires and the Mother of All Palapas. The installation was intended to coincide with Earth Day this past Tuesday. But the museum is also opening a holocaust show on Thurday, May 1, so Dixon kept saying that our work seem to fit more with the holocaust than Earth Day. Especially since no one seems to quite understand Earth Day - it's like a company is handing out green coozies to hold aluminum beer cans and that's how they exhibit their 'green-ness.' So just like everything else, it becomes just another marketing scam. We scare people about the degradation of the environment and then fill the stores with 'green' products that they must buy or else they'll be destroying the planet. EarthDay out, holocaust in.

So, with all the sad, lonely gloves found abandoned and trampled on the streets, and then with the endless stack of black tires, all their treads facing out like the undersides of peoples feet, we started to see the tower and the palapa in a much more somber way. I keep thinking of the tower of tires as a symbol of all our mile-driving. We all get in our cars as a matter of habit. We don't think about driving ever. Only in terms of how much does it cost to fill up and what kind of car do I drive. All those tires, miles and miles. I'm convinced that the mile-driving is the true American sickness. It's the thing that separates us quickly from our friends and family. And its the tires that make it all possible, but we don't ever see them. All the old tires get tucked away or recycled, out of sight, out of mind. In the end, the The Endless Tower of Tires is more American than the Washington Monument. Partly because it's black.

As my collaborator Bob Brown says, the tower is an homage to Brancusi's Endless Column. And also an homage to Allan Kaprow, who once covered a VW Bug with jelly and then had a bunch of people lick it off with their tongues. It was probably grape jelly or maybe strawberry jam. I'll have to say that part of the reason I built this tower is simply because Bob wanted to. If you haven't checked out his exhibit at the CAM, then go now. Bob Brown is a creative force and he has had a deep impact on my work.

On Friday, I put the final tire on top of the tower. The scaffolding will probably come down on Monday. I have to mention Beth Pancoe and Forest Heddon over at SDI Construction. They donated the scaffolding and generally gave me the kind of construction company lift that I needed to build this thing. We'll be announcing some kind of christening for the 'complex' - which has something to do with celestial turtles. The complex is also reported to be a beacon for time traveling elephants. The amphibious ones with metallic green skin full of sharps of red like snake's eyes. They may be from Babel. And their just looking for a nice place to live with a little pond that won't dry up.

Woven Tree for Durham EarthDay

Wabi Sabi Warehouse resident artist Dan Brawley recently completed a micro-residency at Duke University to prepare for the upcoming Durham EarthDay Festival. All old, damaged, darkened and misused tupperware-type plastic containers should be cleaned and dropped off at the Independent Art Company's Wabi Sabi Warehouse located at 19 North 9th Street in downtown Wilmington. Bags full of plastic containers, plastic bags and bottle caps can be left at the door if nobody's around! Colorful and funky rule the day - bring us your old plastic instead of throwing it away! Stay tuned for an announcement about the "Collaboration Celebration Sensation" - an interactive, everyone's-invited day of artmaking in preparation for the exhibition. "Retirement Plan For Plastics" runs from February 14 to March 14 in the Ann Flack Boseman gallery on the campus of UNCW.

Missing Glove?

Found Glove Project
by Dixon Stetler

I rescue gloves from traffic and mud puddles on the street.

You can't lose something in stages, one day you have it, the next day you don't. Sometimes a glove is lost on one day, but you don't know it until the time comes to use it again, and its not there. Like socks that get lost in the dryer, there is something universal about losing gloves.

Gloves originate in pairs, and occasionally I do find them that way, but usually it's just the one. That means that the other thing that is lost is the glove the owner ends up with. The one I didn't find on the street. Does that glove end up in the trash? Nobody wants to protect just one hand. What's the point? One should just go out and buy another pair. A discarded or misplaced glove immediately renders its partner reduntant.

Picking up found gloves is a silent gesture of optimism and thoughtfulness in a crazy, fast paced world. You see them perched upright on a fence, or safely placed on a wall, out of harms way.

I have a plan for these gloves, and I need your help. I need more gloves than you can imagine! Any type of glove is wanted and needed, in any old nasty condition, in pairs or single: work, wooly, surgical, rubber, fingerless, mittens...

I have 3 drop off sites for these gloves:

Old Books on Front Street, 22 North Front Street

Wabi Sabi Warehouse, 19 North 9th Street

Make Art, 6005 Oleander Drive

Or mail them: 2067 Harrison Street, Wilmington, NC 28401

Finished project will be constructed in a public space, to be enjoyed (or not!) by any and all. Please let me know if you want to be added as a drop-off site. Thanks!
